I'm not sure if that's the whole story - at least with mine. I've noticed that I begin to hear valve train sounds (light ticking etc) starting between 2-3 miles before I hit reserve. But if I switch to reserve they go away (I assume they come back when it hits nearly empty but I've never waited that long before filling up). It's had me a little confused - figured it must be something to do with lower pressure or something when the fuel level gets real close to the petcock opening, but I have no idea.
